Swatch chip arm qualifies Bluetooth LE chip
EE Times - 4 Octobre 2011
LONDON – EM Microelectronic-Marin SA, the semiconductor division of Swatch Group Ltd. (Biel, Switzerland), has announced that its EM9301 Bluetooth low energy radio chip has received Bluetooth V4.0 qualification.
The EM9301, part of the EM Microelectronic (Marin, Switzerland) CoolRF range, has been around since October 2009 when Triad Semiconductor (Winston-Salem, North Carolina) and Z-Focus Technology Group (Palatine, Illinois) demonstrated Bluetooth LE transfers using the chip, to BLE v0.9.
The EM9301 is a single-mode master/slave controller optimized for low energy systems such as wireless sensors, wireless remote controls and wireless monitoring and with an operating supply voltage as low as 0.8V. It is suitable for applications with single-cell batteries or of energy harvesters such as solar cells, piezo-electric and electro-magnetic elements, EM Microelectronic said. When used with an 8051 microcontroller the EM9301 provide's "the most energy-efficient solution for Bluetooth low energy application," the company claimed.
In receive mode, the EM9301 requires only 16.5-mA peak current from physical layer to application layer. When the Bluetooth low energy connection is not required, the system power budget can be optimized by setting the sleep or idle mode in which the circuit itself consumes less than 1.0-microamp. It can be interfaced with any 8-, 16- or 32-bit microcontroller and is now confirmed as being Bluetooth V4.0 compliant.
EM Microelectronic has worked with Alpwise SA (Grenoble, France) to develop a series of development tools including SDKs, dongles, modules and software suites running on the EM9301.

Sybase iAnywhere software to be distributed as part of OP's application suite
Open Plug - 12 février 2007
Sybase iAnywhere software products to be distributed as part of Open-Plug’s ELIPS Application Suite
3GSM World Congress, Barcelona – February 12th, 2007 - Open-Plug today announced the strengthening of their adoption of Sybase iAnywhere embedded mobile solutions within Open-Plug’s ELIPS solutions.
This was done working through Sybase iAnywhere’s distributor in France, Alpwise. The new agreement will allow Open-Plug to distribute Sybase iAnywhere embedded mobile products to handset makers as part of Open-Plug’s leading-edge ELIPS open platform. Sybase iAnywhere SyncML Data Sync, IrDA and Bluetooth connectivity software protocols are part of the agreement.
Sybase iAnywhere connectivity software products have been available in the Open- Plug ELIPS solution for almost one year” said Eric Baissus, CEO of Open-Plug. ”We are happy to bring our business relationship one step further with this leading player and its value-added reseller in France, Alpwise. It is a clear advantage offered to our customers to get such easy access to a leading solution like Sybase iAnywhere to achieve the best performance in terms of reliable connectivity and interoperability with multiple devices.”
Open-Plug will deliver Sybase iAnywhere embedded connectivity products integrated, optimized and pre-validated within Open-Plug’s ELIPS open platform. The following connectivity features and corresponding protocol stack implementations will be available:
- IrDA infrared protocol stack,
- Multi-channel OBEX that can be mapped to any transport layer,
- SyncML Data Synchronization embedded client (Offering Microsoft Outlook synchronization), and
- Bluetooth.
Due to the unique characteristics of the ELIPS open platform, this integration can be used and reused on multiple hardware platforms with minimal efforts.
As part of the agreement, Open-Plug customers will also have access to on demand services covering low level adaptation on final connectivity-hardware as well as interoperability testing and support to certification.
“We’re pleased that Open-Plug chose Sybase iAnywhere as the integrated and preferred solution for Bluetooth in the ELIPS platform,” said Nathan Pendleton, area vice president, Mobile Device Solutions, Sybase iAnywhere. “Combining the strengths of our connectivity technologies with Open-Plug’s innovative platform enables phone manufacturers to take advantage of powerful pre-integrated features that will help bring devices to market more rapidly.”
Based on Open-Plug’s unique and patented Flexibleware™ technology, the ELIPS platform enables the rapid development of mass market phones – from low-end to high-end – which represent more than 90% of the market. With its technology, Open- Plug has successfully adapted the component-based approach to the embedded software industry, delivering the flexibility of a true modular architecture on mass market terminals, with neither resource nor power consumption penalty. ELIPS is available on the most popular Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS).
Today, Open-Plug is actively pursuing the development of its ecosystem of partners in order to bring to the market even more ELIPS-Enabled mobile applications giving the handset makers access, with unmatched time to market, to the latest innovations in the area of embedded software and applications.
